The Árbediehtu Pilot Project at Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Article 8(j) Meeting in Montreal.
The Árbediehtu Pilot Project organizes a side-event on November 4 at the Sixth meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions (WG8J 6) 2 – 6 November 2009 – Montreal, Canada

The Árbediehtu Pilot Project is about Sami traditional knowledge.
The project involves exclusively indigenous Sami institutions as partners.
The Sami University College is coordinating the project. The objective of the project is to develop methodology to document, store, preserve and protect Sami traditional knowledge. Local knowledge holders are mentors. For more information: www.arbediehtu.no.

The use of the Sami concept árbediehtu instead of “traditional knowledge” clarifies knowledge as both the information and the process, emphasizes different ways to gain, achieve or acquire knowledge.

The concept indicates indissoluble ties between the past, the present and the future, which is validated by árbi, “heritage; inheritance”.

Side event on November 4th 2009, Room 7A, Level 3 at 13:15-14:45
Each partner institution has its sub-project. For the CBD meeting we introduce our partner, RiddoDuottarMuseat, a Sami museum in Northern Norway with its project “Building a Sami Turf Hut.” The aim is to document Sami building technology and the philosophy of interaction with natural materials and environment. Young Sami people participate together with the elders and the knowledge holders. '
